Renee is a native Oklahoman, who has been drawing since grade school, where more of her school paper went for drawing than for schoolwork. In later life, she found photography, loved working with black & white images, and set up a darkroom in her master bath where she spent many enjoyable hours with photos. Next came watercolor painting, which she enjoyed for many years, taking workshops from many excellent instructors through the years. Acrylic paints were next, then a workshop in Spain that introduced her to earth pigments. These are currently used for her artwork. Renee enjoys the experiences of trying new painting methods, with all the “what ifs” that come along for the experience.
Tulsa Artists Guild Artist Renee Dotson’s art projects from the surface and compels one to want to touch the uneven texture. One needs to experience her art in person to appreciate the tactile quality of it Even the process to create her very tactile abstract art is quite fascinating. Renee tell us, “The natural pigments I am using are created from rocks. That have to be ground down into fine granules…. I raise the garage door, put on my N95 mask, get out my hammer and protective covers, and pound away in the doorway! Then comes a sifter…that won’t go back in the kitchen…and more pounding.”
